17th International Service-Learning Conference 2014

The tentative agenda and registration form for the 17th International Service-Learning Conference, to be held on 28 and 29 August at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Buenos Aires is already available here. Just like last year, the Conferece will be a meeting and exchange between students, faculties, researchers, officials and leaders of social organizations throughout Latin America and different countries around the world.
The participation in the Conference is free of charge and open. The event has been declared of National Interest by the National Ministry of Education by resolution No. 353 SE. Further, the resolutions of the City and the Province of Buenos Aires are still in the process.
The XI International Week will be held from August 26 and will provide additional workshop for visitors from abroad and for the institutions supported  by CLAYSS. The tentative agenda can be downloaded here.

First activity CLAYSS Uruguay

First activity CLAYSS Uruguay
We celebrate this year the team CLAYSS Uruguay, composed Mag Ana Maria Scala, Mr. Catalina Thölke Mstra Paats and settled.

After several years of working with the promotion of service-learning in Uruguay, in partnership with various social organizations and government agencies in 2014 CLAYSS formalized an agreement with the Department of Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay (MEC). With the support of the Civil Partnership The Chajá, I has been developed the first edition of the online course "approach to teaching and learning supportive services in primary and non-formal education."

With the technical assistance team CLAYSS Uruguay, is being developed in the virtual platform MEC a free course for forty faculties, authorities and supervisors of primary education, as well as technicians and operators of non-formal education. The successful call promises to continue growing.

Course goals

  • Promote the design, implementation and institutionalization of community service-learning projects, based on the pedagogy of service-learning in institutions of Primary Public Education and Non-Formal Education.
  • Recognize the characteristics of a service-learning project and its differences with other solidarity practices.
  • Know and apply strategies and tools for assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of service-learning projects.

The course will feature a classroom instance at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and Culture in Montevideo during the month of July. It will be attended by officials of MEC and CLAYSS. The material relating to the topic will be handed during the course.
The call has been a real success; participants are highly motivated, so that is expected to continue developing similar courses this year aimed at teachers of other areas and subsystems of the public education of Uruguay as well.

CLAYSS in Chile: Course for authorities of Latin American Universities

Nieves Tapia, director of CLAYSS, was invited by FIUC (International Federation of Catholic Universities) to participate in the course "Leading a Catholic University in the XXI century", addressed to a group of 15 Latin American newly elected governing.
The Silva Henríquez Catholic University -host the meeting- organized, during the stay of  Nieves Tapia an open conference with the participation of  more than a hundred faculties and students of Universities and schools from Chile.
Organized by the University area of service-learning, the meeting was opened by the Vice President for Student Development and Identity (VIDE), Fernando Vergara. The reunion with members of the Chilean Network service-learning generated a friendly and festive atmosphere that also included those participating for the first time.

CLAYSS at the Conference of University Community Engagement in Canada

The Engineer Alejandra Herrero, President of CLAYSS, participated in the meetings of analysis, planning and discussion of draft Community and Social Responsibility Research in Higher Education (Analysis of global surveys and institutional strengthening) of the UNESCO Programme of the International Development Research Center (IDRC UNESCO).

CLAYSS Activities in Italy and Spain

CLAYSS through Ms. Carina Rossa, was in many activities in Italy and Spain.
In the Neapolitan city of Benevento, Italy, the seventh edition of "Città di Benevento Fellowship Award" was held this year. The same one was dedicated to the topic "People of brotherhood in the family, at school and social spheres."
Moreover, at the Complutense University of Madrid was held Iberoamerican 1st Congress of Social Education. The Congress was carried out in the Faculty of Education of the University, from 7 to 9 May with the title "social education in situations of risk and conflict.” It was organized by the Pace Center and sponsored by the Province of Benevento and Campania. Approximately 300 people attended, among youth, families and adults.

The warm and lively presence of young Neapolitans promise the development of innovation projects in urgent social issues in the region, such as the law, the inclusion of African immigrants and the Middle East, job creation and the care of the atmosphere.
In The Complutense University of Madrid was held the 1st Iberoamerican Congress of Social Education, which brought together educators and educational researchers from Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries.

The Congress was carried out in the Faculty of Education of the University from 7 to 9 May with the title "social education in situations of risk and conflict." During the event, Ms. Carina Rossa who was representing CLAYSS staged a presentation on "Learning and supportive services in the construction of citizenship and community.
_Youth in Action

Engineering students serving rural schools

Students of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University Lord of Sipan (Chiclayo, Peru), apply their knowledge and practice make a valuable and efficient service to rural schools in the region, through service-learning project.
"Care to new generations moche" is the name of the activity, which  is part of the Local Development Programme (PADEL) institutionally developed from different degrees of the University, with different programs coordinated with the municipalities of the region service-learning.

_Faculty Development

CLAYSS in the iEARN International Conference, 2014

Between June 29 and July 5, 2014 will be held the International Conference of Faculties and Youth Meeting of the iEARN network in the city of Puerto Madryn, Province of Chubut, Argentina. The motto of the iEARN International Conference 2014 will be "Creativity, innovation and global learning."
Organized by the Development Foundation and iEARN (International Education and Resource Network - www.iearn.org), the Conference aims to showcase and share new trends and ideas relevant studies in the field of ICT and education, particularly related to topics such as creativity, global learning and teaching innovation in collaborative projects with technology.
Ms. Rosa Maria Tapia, representing CLAYSS will provide the workshop "Tools 2.0 for the development of service-learning projects."

Classroom Training in Entre Ríos

On 5 and 6 June CLAYSS provide an Onsite Training for Secondary Level in Entre Rios city. On June 5 Professor Maria Nieves Tapia participate in a panel on "Solidarity and Pedagogy High School" as part of a Day of Learning and Classroom Training Service, organized by the Faculty Teresa of Avila Catholic University of Argentina - See Paraná - and CLAYSS. This instance will be open to the public.

XV Meeting of the Iberoamerican Network of service-learning

The next meeting of the Network will take place in Buenos Aires, in the context of the XI International Service-Learning Week, on Saturday 30 of August from 10 to 12:30 pm.

The registration for the World Conference of the Talloires Network Leaders is beginning.

Until August 30 will be open enrollment to attend the World Conference of  Talloires Network leaders to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2 to 4th of December 2014. Addressed to authorities, administrative staff, faculties and students from around the world, one of its central topics is the contribution of universities to the development of communities and countries. Congress will have simultaneous translation from English to Spanish.

Call for papers to researchers in service-learning
Between 14 to 17 October will be held in Bogota, Colombia, the 6th International Seminar on Studies Fellowship, organized by the University of Santo Tomé. If you wish to participate as a speaker, you can send a summary until June 15, 2014. Thematic to be developed in the seminar are Latin American Integrated development and brotherhood, fraternity and integration of nations and fraternity, democracy and active participation.

Socially Engaged Teachers and Students Handbook (new edition)

The new edition of the Socially Engaged Teachers and Students Handbook is already available in our website. This publication was produced jointly by CLAYSS and Natura Cosmetics as part of our “Believe to See” Program which currently supports more than 50 schools conducting sevice-learning projects in all 24 Argentinian jurisdictions.
