CLAYSS in the Service-Learning Conference in Eastern Europe

Through a videoconference by Prof. Nieves Tapia, CLAYSS participated in the Service-Learning Conference held in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) under the heading "Service-Learning‐ Students' engagement and functional knowledge". The Congress brought together schools representatives from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Kosovo, Slovakia and Bosnia-Herzegovina who are currently participating in the "Schools generating a democratic society" project, within the framework of schools that develop Service-Learning projects. The conference was an opportunity for participants to share their practices and lessons learned, and also to start talking about what is happening in the field of Service-Learning in other European regions and in Latin America.

Meeting with the Board of Education -Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) Mg Rosita Angelo

On February 10th CLAYSS Coordinators –Uruguay office, met with the Director of National Education Mg. Rosita Angelo.
With an eye on the current agreement applicable to 2017 and the various actions to be carried out jointly during the year 2016 the Award Ceremony of the 2015 Solidarity Education Contest was scheduled for next April 7th at 11am in the Executive Tower of the Presidency in Montevideo. In addition, there was time to work on proposals for online training on the EduMec platform and the Solidarity Education Contest 2016.

Next awards delivery for the Solidarity Education Contest 2015

February 11th 2015 was a meeting day for the Solidarity Education Competition jury which is composed by Social Educator Monica Acosta appointed by MEC, Prof. Marina Calandria appointed by ANEP and Lic. Catalina THöLKE designated by CLAYSS – Uruguay office and El Chajá NGO. After evaluating the thirty-three experiences received, the jury decided to award eight educational institutions and give a special mention to other five. Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony to be held on April 7th with educational authorities.
Congratulations to all the institutions that submitted their experiences for daring to share their valuable work. All experiences received are significant in articulating curricular content to a solidarity action with the community and student participation.

_YOUTH IN ACTION

Uruguayan solidarity experience honored for its community contribution

Community Basic Training students from FPB Comunitario Aeroparque, an educational institution from Uruguay, were recognized at the end of 2015 in the Centro MEC Aeroparque for their contribution to the community of Aeroparque.
Together with students and their families the ceremony was attended byCLAYSS sede Uruguay members, who accompanied the project during its development. Along with them, teachers, community members, authorities of the Uruguay's Work University -UTU, the Minister of Social Development Marina Arismendi, the Mayor of Canelones Yamandú Orsi and many national and local authorities of the Social Development Ministry, Education and Culture and Fe y Alegría Uruguay honoured the students.

_FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Training at Austral University

On February 16th at the Austral University (Pilar headquarters) there was a workshop conference organized by the University’s School of Education and CLAYSS aimed at coordinators of solidarity activities and Creativity Action and Service (CAS) from the International Baccalaureate. 36 teachers participated, mostly coming from northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, as well as Quilmes, Chubut and Buenos Aires. The workshop began with a lecture by Prof. María Nieves Tapia on "Academic quality with social projection: the pedagogical approach of service-learning." After the lecture, there was an exchange workshop coordinated by CLAYSS team of trainers, composed of Lic. Luz Avruj, Lic. María Rosa Tapia and Lic. María Luna Kelly.

One of 2016 goals for CLAYSS is to continue working in schools adhered to the International Baccalaureate to contribute in the articulation of CAS activities with the academic curriculum.

III National Meeting of the Chilean Service-Learning Network (REase)

The "Third Service-Learning National Congress” took place on January 22nd and was organized by the Chilean Service-Learning Network (REase), along with Colunga Foundation and the Catholic University, which hosted the meeting this year. The meeting aimed to be a forum for dialogue in which different participants could share Service-Learning experiences, and demonstrate how this approach helps to better prepare future professionals and also to promote the expansion of this education proposal to other actors in society.
We congratulate our Chilean colleagues, who already have 300 members in their network!

New meeting of the Spanish Network of Universities announced

The VII National and II International University Service-Learning Congress of Spain will take place at the University of Santiago de Compostela, October 2016. Registration and call for papers are now open. CLAYSS appreciates the honor of being chosen to be part of the Academic Council of the Congress.

Global Youth Service Day 2016

April 15-17 a new edition of Youth Service Day is celebrated. Organized by YSA (Youth Service America), which promotes and seeks to give visibility to children and youth solidarity impulse worldwide.

A Mexican University will host the next Network Conference

After receiving applications from universities around the world, the Network’s steering committee has decided to accept the Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico) as the next host of The Talloires Network Leaders Conference (TLNC). The Conference is held every two years, having previously held in Bellagio (2010), Madrid (2012) and Cape Town (2014). More information will be coming soon!

    Papers for publication Higher Education

    “Philanthropy & Education”, publication run by the Teachers College of Columbia University, United States, calls for teachers, education specialists and graduate students who have recently submitted their thesis to submit their papers for the first edition in November 2016.
