Training begins for prison operators - Service-Learning Promotion Programme
June 25 began the training cycle for more than 270 Prison Operators in agreement between CLAYSS and the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR), delivered to staff working in centers for people deprived of liberty throughout the country. The training was carried out through the Penitentiary Training Centre (CEFOPEN) of the INR. In this training cycle for Penitentiary Operators, CLAYSS Uruguay Headquarters will be training teams in Penitentiary Centers of Soriano, Salto, Paysandú, Florida, Colonia and Montevideo.
This year, it also provides work in 4 prisons for adults and 2 prisons for adolescents in conflict with the law through its Support Programme. In addition to these strategies, work will be done on the continuous training of teams and officials linked to confinement contexts throughout the country, both onsite and online.
This training will be within the framework of the comprehensive proposal that CEFOPEN provides to those who play this role in prisons throughout the country. The proposal was outlined and agreed by both institutions, and aims to strengthen the integration of knowledge and methodologies around the pedagogy of Service-Learning in environments of confinement and with people deprived of liberty.
The work, systematization and research on confinement contexts is one of the four strategic lines that CLAYSS Uruguay has defined for the fulfillment of its goals for the next three years. In order to comply with them, inter-institutional agreements have been made with INR and the Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion (INISA) with whom it will also carry out actions in the next three years.
The initiative to train prison operators will also be accompanied by other strategies in alliance with INR, including mutual collaboration for research, analysis, reflection and dissemination of proposals on the subject of prison contexts. |

Service-Learning in the Arts in high school
Secondary School No. 5040 is located on the outskirts of Oran, Salta, bordering neighborhoods where insecurity, violence and drug consumption and sale are everyday events. It is attended by students from low-income families who suffer from this problem which, added to the economic difficulties, makes it difficult for them to integrate and remain in the institution.
In a space where they are accompanied by their teachers, a group of 2nd and 3rd year students proposed to convert through art an abandoned property of the city. The result was an ecological park with three murals so that the community could enjoy a recreation space and a garbage-free, clean and welcoming environment for the community.
The project, which succeeded in improving the academic performance of its students and reducing absenteeism, continues with the idea of incorporating a fourth mural, more games and a 5-a-side soccer field. The solidarity educational experience was awarded in the 2018 Presidential "Solidarity Schools" Award. |
