22nd International Service-Learning Conference

 

The 22nd International Service-Learning Conference was held on August 29-30, 2019 at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina, Alicia Moreau de Justo 1300, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was attended by teachers, school heads, leaders of organizations, officials, students and specialists from Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kosovo, Mexico, Montenegro, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, and the United States.
The Conference was opened by Oscar Ghillione, Secretary of Educational Management of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology of Argentina, the Rector of the UCA, Dr. Miguel Ángel Schiavone, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the UCA, Dr. Liliana Pantano, Dr. Jorge San Martín, CLAYSS President and Sandra Gonzalez, Director of the OEI Uruguay Headquarters.
During the morning there were two plenary sessions, the first with Prof. María Nieves Tapia, CLAYSS Director with "Service-learning pedagogy and civic education for the 21st century" and the second "Service-Learning around the world", an overview of the current SL affairs moderated by Lic. Enrique Ochoa, CLAYSS Executive Director  with Zeljka Marjanovic from MIOS (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Leticia López Villarreal from UDEM (Mexico), Sorlinda Bocanegra and Gloria Inés Herrera from the National Programme of Peace Education (Colombia) and María Rosa Tapia from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina).


In the afternoon, a panel on "Research on service-learning" was held with the participation of Pilar Folgueiras from the University of Barcelona (Spain), Ma. Alejandra Herrero from CLAYSS and Andrew Furco from the University of Minnesota, USA.
On the second day, as in previous years, the first panel was dedicated to the Award Winning Experiences of the Presidential "Solidarity Schools" 2018 in Argentina and the "Solidarity Education" Contest in Uruguay. Alberto Croce from Fundación Voz commented on the projects presented. This was followed by a plenary session on "How we evaluate service-learning projects" Nilda Albarracín from the Banda del Rio Salí School of Commerce (Argentina), Graciela del Campo from the National Solidarity Education Program (Argentina), María Nazarena Bamonte from the University of San Andrés; and Consuelo Huergo from the National University of Mar del Plata.


Both days had concurrent sessions with panels and workshops on various disciplines and themes associated with educational solidarity projects. In addition, the "Student Solidarity Meeting" was held again, consolidating an annual exchange space where youth from various countries shared with their peers the projects they develop in their institutions and then read the conclusions to the participants of the Conference before the closure. At the closing, Carlos Horacio Torrendell, from the UCA and Prof. María Nieves Tapia took stock of the Conference and set the objectives for the future.
