22ND INTERNATIONAL SERVICE-LEARNING CONFERENCE
The Conference will be held on August 29-30, 2019 at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina, Alicia Moreau de Justo 1300, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
V International Service-learning Researchers' Symposium
On August 28, 2019, the international Service-learning Researchers' Symposium will be held in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina within the framework of the activities of the XVII International Service-Learning Week. This new edition is organized by CLAYSS with the support of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network and sponsored by the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE). As in previous editions, the approved papers will be presented orally in round tables and during the presentation of papers in poster format. Some authors will be invited to present their work at the 22nd International Service-Learning Conference that will take place on August 29-30, 2019.
The deadline for submissions will be April 15, 2019. They may be presented in Spanish, Portuguese and English. The instructions and format for submission will soon be available for download on CLAYSS website. |

2018 Presidential "Solidarity Schools" Awarded
On December 3, in the Alfredo Bravo Hall of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, distinctions were presented to the winners of the 2018 edition of Argentina's Presidential "Solidarity Schools" Award.
On this occasion, 1,100 schools from all over the country participated and 11 school projects from the provinces of Buenos Aires, Chubut, Córdoba, Río Negro, Tucumán, Chaco, Jujuy, Mendoza, Salta and Tucumán were finalists. |

CLAYSS in Spain
From 10 to 15 December, CLAYSS Director, Nieves Tapia, developed an intense programme of activities in Barcelona, Madrid and Coslada. Among the main ones were: a conference for the educational centres of that city, a working day with technicians from the Consorci d'Educació and members of the Centro Promotor de ApS de Cataluña, a conference within the framework of the III Jornadas de Formación en aprendizaje-servicio de la Universidad Complutense, the XI Encuentro Estatal de aprendizaje-servicio and the IV delivery of the Premio de aprendizaje-servicio de España and the Annual Assembly of the Red Estatal de aprendizaje-servicio de España, consisting of representatives of all the autonomous communities, which elected new authorities. There, Prof. Tapia was named the first "honorary member" of the Network.

Completion of the Certificate with EDUCAPAZ in Colombia
Mr. Sebastián Puglisi, representing CLAYSS, coordinated the closing of the certificate for the improvement of rural education for teachers in the framework of the EDUCAPAZ Program in the Municipality of Chaparral, South of Tolima, Colombia. On November 30, teachers from different educational institutions presented their proposals to link their schools with the communities of which they are members. Solidarity service-learning is constituted as a strategy to contribute to generating a culture of peace, meeting, solidarity commitment and improvement of teaching practices. |

"Service-Learning in the Arts" Program Receives Distinction
On November 27, the Secondary Schools N° 4-127 "Centro Polivalente de Arte" and N° 4-142 "S/N" and Special Education N° 7-002 "Eduardo Primitivo Chimeno Codó" received a distinction for their solidarity educational project "Inclusión laboral a partir de talleres artísticos de cerámica". The recognition was granted by the Honorable Deliberative Council of San Rafael, Mendoza, in an act that was carried out in the Municipality of that district.
The project is part of the Support Program for Educational Solidarity Institutions " Service-Learning in the Arts " for which Pablo Daniel Buján Matas, its coordinator, was present to receive a distinction declaring the actions carried out by CLAYSS to be of educational, cultural and social interest. |

December Activities
On December 12, the President of CVU/CLAYSS Uruguay Lucila Leis and the Operational Coordinator Catalina Thölke met with the Councillor of CODICEN Prof. Laura Motta with the aim of presenting the planning of the second stage of the Program for the Promotion of SL in Uruguay and to request the endorsement for the work with ANEP educational centers in the next triennium.
That same day we participated in the closing ceremony of educational and cultural activities 2018 of Unit No. 7 of INR Canelones. Within this framework, the greenhouse was inaugurated, a project coordinated by students and teachers of CES ECE (Secondary School in Education in Contexts of Confinement) in alliance with the MIE of the Department of Canelones (Interinstitutional Table of Education for People in Conflict with Criminal Law) and collaboration of the Canarian Commune. This project is carried out within the framework of the Support Programme of the CLAYSS headquarters in Uruguay. |

Workday in El Chajá
On November 24, a Day of reflection on Integral Ecology took place: "A path of care to the encounter of good living" - (Tekoporä) organized by the Civil Association El Chajá with the support of CLAYSS Uruguay Headquarters. It was held in Paraje El Tornero, Department of Florida, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thirty-five rural school teachers from the departments of Durazno, Florida and Flores and the Capder Masters participated.
CLAYSS participated with an instance of training and workshop in charge of the Mag. Olga de Las Heras on: "The proposal of solidary service-learning in Rurality: a pedagogical and philosophical view". In addition, among other speakers there was the intervention of the UdelaR, through the Faculty of Agronomy, being attended by the working team of the Program "Gardens in Schools", constituting a very significant contribution from this experience. Adding, of course, to the activities that El Chajá has been developing in rural school gardens. The active and committed participation of all attendees was highlighted. |

Solidarity teacher finalist candidate for international prize
Master Director Dario Greni Olivieri of School No. 88 of the Violetas Canelones was in the top 50 finalists of the Global Teacher Prize of the Varkey Foundation. For 4 years CLAYSS has been providing technical support to the School in the development of SL Projects and in 2018 ¨Concurso Education Solidaria¨ awarded the School with a trajectory award. https://www.globalteacherprize.org/person?id=7500

Solidarity Project of a Special School in Cordoba once again won the Presidential Award
One of the institutions that won the first prize in the 2018 edition of the Presidential "Solidarity Schools" Award was the "Juana Manso" Special School in Villa Allende, Province of Córdoba. The institution has a historic and deep commitment to work with its community, offering education to children and young people with educational needs arising from disability or unfavorable contexts that hindered their educational journey in primary or secondary schools that provide common education.
The 4th, 5th and 6th year students of the Carpentry Orientation of the Special School "Juana Manso" developed two consecutive solidarity experiences for which they were awarded. The first one was "Aluminum canes for blind and low vision people... and something else..." which consisted in the construction of folding aluminum canes in one piece for visually impaired people and people with low vision of scarce resources. The second "For an inclusive city, braille signage in Villa Allende" was detached from the first and proposed the making of braille signage to place in the streets of the city. The institution had already been awarded the Presidential Prize "Escuelas Solidarias" on four occasions: Two First Prizes (2016 and 2014) and two mentions (in 2011 and 2009), as well as other recognitions. |

Virtual courses - 2nd cohort 2018
In December, we concluded the 2nd cohort of 2018 courses. During this period we have received 87 educators on our virtual platform, from Albania, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, Slovakia and Mexico. We celebrate the ever-increasing interest of educators who are becoming promoters of service-learning in their institutions! |

Participation in Workshops in UBA
CLAYSS participated in the Seminar "University and associative movement: from volunteerism to collaborative work" a Conference about Disability organized by the Secretariat of Extension of the UBA which was attended by 200 people. Nieves Tapia presented the proposal of service-learning as a way of leadership for children, adolescents and young people with disabilities. |

CLAYSS in Mar del Plata
On October 29, Prof. María Nieves Tapia was in the City of Mar del Plata giving the conference " Solidarity Service-Learning Projects in School and Higher Education: Social Commitment and Excellence" at the Colegio Atlántico del Sur, which was attended by 180 people. During the Conference, the Honorable Deliberative Council of the District of General Pueyrredón gave her the title "Academic Merit" for her outstanding national and international academic trajectory. |

Delivery of the Spanish Service-Learning Awards
On Friday, December 14, the 2018 Spanish Service-Learning Awards, organized by the Spanish Network, Edebé y Educo. In a moving ceremony presided over by the Secretary of State for Education and Vocational Training, Alejandro Tiana, the mayor of Coslada, Ángel Viveros, and the president of the School Council of the Community of Madrid, Rafael Carbonell, along with other authorities and social references, 24 service-learning experiences were recognized, some carried out by more than one educational center.

New authorities of the Spanish Service-Learning Network
At its annual Assembly, the Network elected a new Board of Directors. Javier Torregrosa, from the community of Valencia, replaces the founder of the Network, Roser Batlle, who will continue to be a member of the Board and contribute her usual energy and efficiency. The Board is completed with José Mari Aymerich (Navarra), María Luisa Lozano Gil (Extremadura), Héctor Colunga (Asturias), Aitziber Mugarra (Basque Country), Sonia Segarra Díaz (Asturias), Mar Cruz Mora (Madrid), Cloty López Martínez (la Rioja) and Juan Carlos (Andalucía). |

NYLC Conference celebrates 30 years
Between April 14 and 16, 2019 NYLC (National Youth Leadership Council), a pioneering organization of service-learning in the United States, will hold its 30th Conference at the New Foundations Charter School in Philadelphia, United States. Under the slogan "Cultivating students, growing as leaders" they will celebrate the 30 years of trajectory of the only national conference in the United States. Registration opens December 1.
