Service-learning in Slovak curricula

The Slovak Ministry of Education this year included service-learning in its strategy of educating children and young people for volunteering. The official document quotes the Handbook developed by CLAYSS together with our allies from the Central and Eastern European Service-Learning Network in 2017. The new educational policy was approved by the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Martina Lubyová, on 19 April 2018. Congratulations to our colleague Alzbeta Brozmanova Gregorova, active promoter of the Service-Learning Network of Central and Eastern Europe! On Friday 14 September CLAYSS was present at the University of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the training of teachers of all faculties in Social Educational Practices (PSE), mandatory service-learning spaces that are implemented from this year in all degrees. The initial panel, with Catalina Nosiglia, Jordi Passart, Nieves Tapia and Oscar García, marked the beginning of the course that will be developed online. The course, which has a hundred participants, is organized jointly by the Secretariat of Academic Affairs and the Coordination of PSE, with the pedagogical coordination of Mgr. CLAYSS at the 26th Assembly of the IFCU

From 23 to 27 July Nieves Tapia represented CLAYSS at the 26th General Assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), whose central theme was "Working in solidarity as responsible agents, from the local to the global". The Assembly took place at St Patrick's College in Maynooth, Ireland, and brought together more than 200 rectors from the five continents, who shared experiences and challenges around the social commitment of the Catholic University, as well as some of the service-learning experiences already underway in many of them. CLAYSS was one of the few non-university institutions invited, and numerous rectors valued the contribution of service-learning to the articulation of teaching, research and extension missions within the framework of the identity of Catholic Universities. During the Assembly, the IFCU renewed its authorities for the next triennium, with Isabel Capeloa Gil, rector of the Catholic University of Portugal, being elected to the presidency. Isabel Capeloa Gil was the first woman to occupy the position (in the photo together with the Director of CLAYSS, Nieves Tapia).

SOLIDARITY YOUTH

The Voice of the Protagonists in the 21st Conference

For some years now, there has been a tradition in the International Conferences of a space dedicated exclusively to youth. The " Meeting of solidarity students " took place on Friday, August 24 from 11 am to 5 pm, in which schools that carry out Service-Learning projects were invited to participate. With the objective of promoting learning spaces in which students can do a service to their communities, they shared with their peers their projects, ideas and feelings. Sixty students participated of the Meeting.
After an intense group exchange, the most outstanding points of their conclusions were:
"Do not give up the fight. Count on us and keep us in mind."
"Young people aren't just anybody, we're not lost; we're enthusiastic."
"With projects we learn to communicate. Without these practices, education remains in a bubble context. Knowing the environment of others allows us to problematize our own environment."

PUBLICATIONS

Launch of "Social Commitment in the Higher Education Curriculum", by Nieves Tapia

This new work highlights some of the identifying characteristics of social commitment in Latin American Higher Education in the centenary of the University Reform movement, and frames the proposal of service-learning in the context of the challenges that the new millennium poses to Higher Education.
The second part presents the diverse forms of curricular insertion of solidarity service-learning practices in Higher Education, exemplified with cases documented in the Latin American experience. The section includes a review of solidarity practices established as mandatory requirements for graduation from national policies and from the institutional decisions of some universities in the region.
This publication is clearly the result of the experience of Latin America, and especially of the Argentine experience, but we believe that it may also be useful for specialists from other regions. From CLAYSS we hope that this small piece can contribute to the ongoing dialogue on the social mission of Higher Education in the 21st century.
